What does "Safer" really mean?
Beautycounter and the word “safer”
On social media, like Instagram and Facebook, you might have seen the phrase or hashtag, “safer beauty.” I paused for a moment the other day and thought - What if everyone thinks it is just another hashtag or catchphrase? What if they don’t fully understand what it means? So today, I’m going to bring you some clarity to your curiosity - and if you have never seen that phrase - pay extra attention!
journey to safer
In 2014, I started to make the switch to natural and organic products. But it wasn’t until 2017, that I learned that there is very little regulation in the personal care industry. Meaning even organic and natural brands could be sneaking potentially harmful ingredients into the products I was using every single day. Think about how many products you use in one day - getting a shower, doing your hair, putting on makeup, getting ready for that special date - the average woman uses 12 products a day!
Like many of you, I didn’t know that when I applied my daily personal care products that I was applying toxic chemicals right on my skin with some of those chemicals being absorbed right into my bloodstream. And even after I switched, I didn’t realize the dangers that still lurked in select “natural” brands I was using from the local health food store.
The toxic ingredients found in my shampoo, body lotion and makeup were essentially another factor of my hormonal imbalance and thyroid dysfunction. I never questioned this for a second! After all, like many of you, I thought that we lived in a country that would have regulations to protect us. I never thought twice about the products I was using every single day!
80,000 chemicals are registered for use in consumer products!
80% are approved in 3 weeks or less with little to no safety testing.
1,300 chemicals are banned from products in the European Union.
30 chemicals are banned in the United States.
Decades of studies have found that these toxic chemicals are disrupting our endocrine system as well as our neuroendocrine communication pathways. They have been found to be linked to infertility in both men and women, thyroid metabolism dysfunction, various cancers, miscarriages and birth defects. Health issues are on a rise. With environmental factors, such as diet, stress, and toxins, increasing our chances. We need to reconsider the repetitive use of toxic products every single day. It not only impacts women, but our entire families.
What’s worse is that the Food and Drug Administration (the agency that regulates cosmetics in the United States) allows companies to use chemicals known to be extremely harmful (phthalates, parabans, fragrance) in the products we put on our bodies and on our kids’ bodies every single day, day after day.
After learning about the lack of regulation, what safety testing looks like and learned about the Environmental Working Group’s skin deep database, well, I was and still am happy to support the mission behind Beautycounter. - Safer products in the hands of everyone. In 2017, I joined the mission and wish I would have sooner!
Beautycounter is Safer: Here’s why
At Beautycounter, we’ve banned over 1,500 ingredients on something we like to call - The Never List - setting a new health and industry standard – all while ensuring our products perform and that they’re as indulgent as any other luxe shampoo, lipstick, or oil in the market. Not only are the products high performing and safer, but Beautycounter takes it one step further, advocating for legislative change in Washington. Being a part of Beautycounter is a way to make a difference and bring change to the industry!
Performance + Safety
As consumers, we know if we are spending money on a product we want it to actually perform. At Beautycounter, they understand this as well. After all, it would be pointless to create safer products if they did not achieve what the consumer desired. Often times, this can be a real struggle with 100% organic and non-toxic products, the ingredients are exceptional but the peformance falls flat. Before discovering Beautycounter, I was in that situation – trying endless amounts of natural products only to find that they fell short on performance- you might have found yourself there as well.
While Beautycounter uses both synthetic and organic ingredients, they never compromise on the safety of the ingredients. Beautycounter has developed a groundbreaking and rigorous ingredient screening process, as well as being completely transparent about all of the ingredients that they use.
