3 Things You Probably Didn't Know About Me

things you probably didn’t know and lessons learned

Here at Radiating Wellness, I don’t just want to be your holistic nutritionist but I also want to build relationships with you and always know this is a safe space. So I thought I would share a few things you probably didn’t know about me.

i previously had an online photography business

I started a photography business in 2011. With no idea about podcasts or business, I started a shop on ArtFire and Etsy selling photography prints and handmade inspirational cards. The idea was ignited by visiting an art festival in State College, Pennsylvania and being absolutely mesmerized and inspired by the artists giving their dreams a go.

I worked as a side hustle, starting out with a small white table and a borrowed tent and then grew into a fully branded white 10x10 artisan tent of my own. I learned how to build a website and problem solved as I went along. Researched SEO, networked with other artisans, participated in swag bags for the Country Music Awards, dabbled in product photography for jewelry artists and attended art and craft festivals part time.

Lessons Learned:

  • Sometimes all beautiful things come to an end.

  • And everything in life presents itself at a certain time to teach you many lessons for the phase of life you are in and for the future seasons ahead.

  • I look back at that girl pre-diagnosis, a newlywed and military wife with big dreams and big hopes who went confidently in the direction of creativity without much fear to follow her heart.

  • But…when the business finally felt time to come to an end. I didn’t know any other way to view it except for failure. Not necessarily that I personally failed but more “perceived failure” - what were others thinking? The beliefs that you have to work 9-5 and that all artists are starving.

  • Don’t allow fear of failure keep you from starting. Can you believe when I finally found the NTA program and was considering enrolling I almost didn’t? Who am I to start a new career at the age of 29? To start the non-traditional business model again? Why can’t you do the traditional route? - Even with all of the noise, I decided to give it a go.

She was powerful not because she wasn’t scared but because she went on strongly, despite the fear.

A childlike heart

As a little girl, I remember being adventurous, running around outside. Not afraid to be in my bare feet. I remember enjoying peeing outside by a favorite tree - being wild and free. I remember seeking adventure in the woods amongst the trees. I remember being brave in lightning storms, loving to watch the sky lit up and my mom being terrified. I remember being bold and determined. Artsy and creative. I remember my imagination and curiosity.

As an adolescent, I remember in times of discouragement, I sought out the trees and earth. With my trusted dog, I would sit in the backwoods watching him play and chase chipmunks as I often sat on the ground next to a huge tree.

One time…my childhood friend who is more like a sister and I would go in the creek at her grandparents farm and put our feet in the cow patties that were baking in the sun and then cool them back off in the creek. What’s a cow patty? Well, that’s a pile of cow poop. How many of you are screaming EWWW right now? It was also the same place we would play Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen mysteries and she would scare the crap out of me and her younger brother because we thought everything was true (or at least somewhat).

Lesson Learned:

  • No matter how old you are, always celebrate your inner child and embrace whatever feeds it.

  • Always stay curious, loving, and silly.

  • Good, deep friendships are hard to come by. Tell them you love them.

Celebrate your inner child.

internally, I’m like a little kid in a candy store when it comes to my birthday but you would probably never guess that.

October arrives and the countdown begins. October is for pumpkins, Halloween and my birthday! Duh! So many adults, simply chalk up their birthday as JUST another day. But your birthday means you have been given the birthright to take up space in this world and do something amazing with your unique set of genetics, to live out a purpose, to love.

Honestly, sometimes I find it difficult to navigate the days around my birthday. My lessons in this department are still ever evolving.

lessons I am learning #scorpio

  • “I’m not aging, I’m evolving.” - Unknown

  • If I want others to do things for me, I have to allow others to do things for me. This can be a struggle sometimes especially when so often I do so many things myself.

  • Allow others to show up for you how they know how not how you hope they might.

  • Practice communicating how you want to be loved and appreciated and know this might change depending on the person and situation. Most of all be the change you want to see.

Honestly, I had many more things planned for today’s get to know me and lessons learned but I’m afraid we ran out of space - in an effort to keep these short and digestible. But I’d love to hear from you! How have you reframed events in your life to find the lessons learned? How can you celebrate you and focus on the amazing talents you bring to this world? How can you reconnect to your inner child even as an adult - no matter how old?

And if you enjoyed this more informal “in the life of” post, I’d love to hear from you so I can continue to inspire and share with you.
